Polish television play adaptation of the first of Fyodor Dostoevsky's great novels, in which reflections on the commandment "thou shalt not kill" are shown through the fate of a poor student Raskolnikov. Giving himself the right to commit a justified crime, he kills with an ax an old usurer, whom he despises and considers to be the cause of all human evil.

Before the war, there were 130 cottages in Wołowiec. Today, only eight remain. However, this dying village is not doomed to extinction—a completely new, ninth house is being built there. It is being constructed with the help of neighbors by a man known as "the pig," a traitor and a deserter. A traitor because he uprooted himself, a deserter because he abandoned his native Warsaw and moved to the countryside, claims poet Marcin Świetlicki. This is a misunderstanding, retorts the film's protagonist.
