Biography
Sociologist, writer, and educator. Born in Panama City. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Literature from the José Dolores Moscote Institute in 1962; a degree in Sociology from the National Autonomous University of Mexico in 1969; and a Master's degree in Sociology, specializing in Public Policy and Development Issues, from the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences in Quito, Ecuador, in 1983. Maloney served as Full Professor of Sociology at the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Panama. He was also Professor of Sociology at the Universidad Santa María La Antigua from 1974 to 1984, and at the University of Monterrey from 1972 to 1973. He was Acting Director of the Sociology School at USMA (1974–1975) and Director of the Department and School of Sociology at the University of Panama (1985–1990). He represented Panama on the Steering Committee of the Central American Sociological Association in 1980 and served as Vice President of the Association from 1988 to 1990. He was President of the Center for Afro-Panamanian Studies (1980–1990), a member of the Executive Committee of the Panamanian Sociological Association (1974–1979), founding editor of the Panamanian Journal of Sociology, and founder and Executive Secretary of the Cine-Video-Culture Foundation (1988–1993). In September 1994, he assumed the position of General Director of Educational Radio and Television Channel Eleven.
