Born January 26, 1967 in Corning, California, Maiocco attended Humboldt State University in Arcata, graduating in 1990 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism before embarking on a career that would define 49ers media coverage for an entire generation.
Maiocco began his journalism career as a sports reporter at The Eureka Times-Standard from 1988 to 1992, followed by a stint as sports editor at The Argus in Fremont from 1993 to 1995. His 49ers beat reporting career commenced in 1995 with the Oakland Tribune (Alameda Newspaper Group), where he established his reputation for detailed game coverage and behind-the-scenes access. He moved to the Contra Costa Times from 1997 to 1999, then spent eleven years as the 49ers beat reporter at the Santa Rosa Press Democrat from 1999 to 2010, during which he pioneered digital sports journalism through his groundbreaking "Instant 49ers" blog.
