Biography
Matt Maiocco established himself as one of the NFL's most respected beat reporters through more than three decades of comprehensive San Francisco 49ers coverage, earning recognition for his storytelling excellence, multimedia innovation, and intimate knowledge of the franchise. Born January 26, 1967 in Corning, California, Maiocco attended Humboldt State University in Arcata, graduating in 1990 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism before embarking on a career that would define 49ers media coverage for an entire generation. Maiocco began his journalism career as a sports reporter at The Eureka Times-Standard from 1988 to 1992, followed by a stint as sports editor at The Argus in Fremont from 1993 to 1995. His 49ers beat reporting career commenced in 1995 with the Oakland Tribune (Alameda Newspaper Group), where he established his reputation for detailed game coverage and behind-the-scenes access. He moved to the Contra Costa Times from 1997 to 1999, then spent eleven years as the 49ers beat reporter at the Santa Rosa Press Democrat from 1999 to 2010, during which he pioneered digital sports journalism through his groundbreaking "Instant 49ers" blog. In 2007, Rotoworld ranked his Instant 49ers blog as the number two NFL team blog in the country, recognizing Maiocco's ability to blend traditional journalism with emerging digital platforms. His exceptional storytelling earned him three Pro Football Writers of America awards for game stories and features, cementing his status among elite NFL journalists. As a Pro Football Hall of Fame voter, Maiocco's voice carries significant weight in determining football immortality. Maiocco authored four books chronicling 49ers history, including "Roger Craig's Tales from the San Francisco 49ers Sideline" (2004), "San Francisco 49ers: Where Have You Gone?" (2005), "San Francisco 49ers: The Complete Illustrated History" (2013), and "Letters to 87: Fans Remember the Legacy of Dwight Clark" (2019), preserving franchise legends for future generations. Currently serving as NBC Sports Bay Area's 49ers insider since 2010, Maiocco provides analysis on 49ers Pregame Live and Postgame Live, co-hosts the popular "49ers Talk" podcast with Jennifer Lee Chan and Laura Britt, and appears regularly on 95.7 The Game as the 49ers Insider. Now in his 31st season covering the team, Maiocco continues delivering comprehensive coverage while maintaining close relationships with players, coaches, and front-office personnel. Living in the Bay Area with wife Sarah and daughters Jane and Lucy, Maiocco remains the definitive voice on all things 49ers.
