Vijay Ranganathan is an Indian filmmaker working primarily in Tamil cinema. He recently made his feature directorial debut with the film Oh Butterfly (2026), which got him nationwide accolades.
Before directing his first feature, Vijay built experience across multiple areas of filmmaking, including screenwriting, short films, and assistant direction. In 2023, he worked as a writer with Wallwatcher Films, the production banner of filmmaker duo Pushkar-Gayathri, contributing to the development of a feature film project. From 2020 to 2022, he was part of the writers’ room at Trendloud, where he worked as a screenwriter, developing seven series concepts and one feature film idea.
Earlier in his career, Vijay served as Associate Director on the Tamil independent feature film Nilanadukkam (2019). He also wrote and directed the award-winning short film Thoppi in 2018. Vijay completed a direction program at LV Prasad Film and TV Academy in 2017. Before entering the film industry, he worked as an investment banker from 2005 to 2017, before transitioning into filmmaking.
