Okan Buruk (October 19, 1973, Istanbul) is one of the most prominent figures in Turkish football. Buruk began his football career in the youth academy of Galatasaray and made his professional debut at a young age. His dynamism in midfield, competitive spirit, and technical ability made him an indispensable player for Galatasaray. He played a pivotal role in historic achievements such as the UEFA Cup and UEFA Super Cup wins between 1996 and 2000.
His outstanding performances earned him a move to Inter Milan in Italy in 2001. After gaining European experience, he returned to Turkey to play for Beşiktaş and then Galatasaray once again. He concluded his playing career at İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediyespor (now Başakşehir FK) before transitioning into coaching.
As a coach, he has managed teams such as Elazığspor, Gaziantepspor, Sivasspor, Göztepe, Akhisar Belediyespor, and Çaykur Rizespor. His first major success came in 2018 when he won the Turkish Cup with Akhisar Belediyespor. In the 2019-2020 season, he led Istanbul Başakşehir to its first-ever Super League championship, achieving a major success and making his mark in Turkish football history.
In June 2022, he returned to Galatasaray, where he had become a legend as a player, as head coach. In his first season (2022-23) at the helm of the Yellow-Red team, he won the Super League championship. In the following season (2023-24), he secured both the Super Cup and the Super League championship, solidifying his success and further cementing his place in the club's history.
Okan Buruk, who also represented the national team for many years, played a significant role in Turkey's historic third-place finish at the 2002 FIFA World Cup. His coaching philosophy is characterized by tactical discipline, flexible game plans, strong bonds with his players, and a high desire to win.
As both a player and a coach, Okan Buruk has won numerous titles and achieved great success, making him one of the most respected figures in Turkish football. He continues to actively fulfill his role at Galatasaray.
