Biography
Juan Escobedo is a classically trained actor, filmmaker, photographer, and advocate celebrated for his dynamic performances and socially impactful work. Born and raised in San Diego, he developed a deep passion for storytelling that led him to study Theater with an emphasis on Directing at California State University, Los Angeles (Cal State LA). Escobedo’s classical training and artistic versatility have made him a sought-after director, photographer, and performer. His acting credits span film, television, and theater, including a notable role in the Amazon episodic series Trayizon as Detective Lovos. On stage, he has delivered memorable performances in productions that highlight his ability to embody characters with depth and authenticity in Spanish and English. As a photographer, he brings a keen eye for detail and emotion, capturing powerful images that reflect his connection to culture, community, and the human experience. In addition to his work as an actor and photographer, Escobedo is a dedicated filmmaker and advocate, creating projects that address important social issues such as domestic violence, mental health, and cultural identity. He is currently directing the documentary Las Promotoras Against Violence is a documentary that delves into the challenges and triumphs of these community health advocates, showcasing their tireless efforts to educate and empower their neighborhoods. Each member of the Promotoras has a personal connection to the cause, having overcome the trauma of sexual assault or domestic violence themselves. Juan also co-wrote Mari and Mary and is co-writing two other scripts and pilot with Jeff Lee Ranson. His short film Marisol, which he wrote and directed, was OSCAR-qualified and recognized for its excellence, with the script acquired by the Margaret Herrick Library in 2018 for research purposes. The film also won Best Director, Best Film and Best Actress at the San Diego Movie Awards held at the Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA) in San Diego.
