Larry Tung is an award-winning documentary filmmaker and media educator based in New York City. He currently serves as an assistant professor in the Marketing Communications Department at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. Prior to joining FIT, he taught media courses at Hofstra University in Long Island, York College, City University of New York in Queens, and Kean University in New Jersey.
A native of Taiwan, Tung holds an M.F.A. in TV Production from Brooklyn College and an M.S. in Journalism from Columbia University. He has received several prestigious fellowships, including the Vanderbilt University Media Fellowship and the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Faculty Fellowship.
Tung’s films explore themes of social justice and human rights and have been screened at more than 70 film festivals worldwide. His debut film, Daughters from China, won the Best Documentary Award at the Honolulu International Festival in 2005. His 2009 film Welcome to My Queer Bookstore was a finalist in the Short Documentary category at the CMJ Film Festival in New York.
His 2013 film From Leonard to Leona premiered at the Gender Reel Film Festival and was later screened in Mexico, Romania, the United States, and Indonesia. His 2017 film Children of Drum premiered at the African Diaspora International Film Festival in November 2017 and was screened at the RapidLion – The South African International Film Festival in March 2018. His 2021 film Bigger Is Better premiered at the Palm Springs LGBTQ Film Festival and screened in the United States, Canada, China, Korea, India, and Italy. His most recent film, Invisible More, premiered at the New York Documentary Film Festival in November 2025, where it received the Spirit of New York Award.
