Born in Manhattan, New York as the second son of a psychiatrist and an English teacher, Joel became an athlete and a graphic artist. He graduated with a BFA from the University of Michigan's School of Art & Design with awards in film making and interactive design. He also spent time at Columbia University studying theater and sociology before building his career.
