Biography
I have been a presence in Montana film for 34 years, beginning my career as an extra and production assistant on the movie, Rancho Deluxe, filmed in Livingston in 1974. That was followed by other notable films including Missouri Breaks (1976) and Heaven's Gate (1979). I began my professional career in 1986 with the film Cold Feet, scripted by Tom McGuane. Since then, I have worked on many of the top features that have filmed in the state. In addition to Casting Director, I have held the positions of Location Scout and production coordinator, and thus, has a varied understanding of the way films and commercials are produced. Most known for her 'real people' casting, her clients have included many of the top LA and NY production companies and film directors. 'Breaking' into the business through the back door, my story of learning 'on the job' is inspiring. From the beginning, I have held the belief that the film industry is a positive force for economic development and as such, has dedicated much of my time to work with the Montana Film Commission and local chambers of comerce to promote filming in the state. I designed and produced a photographic film guide for Yellowstone Country (1989) and, for many years, represented Montana at the Location Film Expo in L.A. promoting Montana locations for filming. When the State Film office rebuffed my efforts in the name of 'conflict of interest', I suggested to the Department of Economic Development that they involve the CVB's (Convention and Visitor Bureau) of the Chambers as 'spokes in the wheel' with the Helena film office as the 'hub'. This was implemented and has worked that way ever since. In the late 80's/early 90's filming increased dramatically in Montana and it was the vision of myself and Jennie Saks that the commercial industry which was much more lucrative than movies, should be courted. We went to L.A. on our own dime and went door-to-door inviting production companies to film in Montana. They did. The 90's became a very prolific time in commercial as well as film production. With the intention of momentum, Jennie and I co-founded and co-directed the Southern Montana Alliance of Film Professionals, networking crew persons and production companies to bring work to Montana, producing a film guide and crew list, which was mailed to interested companies. I am one of the founders of HatcHfest, a film and visual arts festival held annually. The mission of HatcH is mentorship and the objective is to showcase Montana as a film location. I serve on the Board of Directors of the Bozeman Film Festival, a year round screening of independent films. Mentoring is my passion and I believe in inspiring people to be passionate and empowered - an essential component in the film biz. I am the founder and director of the Montana Actor's Studio, a social networking community for actors of all ages and varying career levels.
