Ajit Das

Acting

Biography
Ajit Das was a highly respected Indian actor, director, and playwright who left a significant mark on the Odia entertainment industry. His passion for the performing arts began in his childhood, heavily influenced by his family's artistic background. His grandfather, Sudhir Chandra Das, was a well-known playwright who ran a theater troupe in Mayurbhanj, which provided Das with early exposure to the stage and sparked his lifelong dedication to acting. Das made his cinematic debut in the Odia film industry, commonly known as Ollywood, with the 1976 film Sindura Bindu. Directed by Dhir Bishwal and set in the 16th century, the film featured Das in a villainous role, serving as a powerful introduction to his on-screen capabilities. Following his successful debut, he seamlessly transitioned into playing both leading hero parts and complex character roles. He is perhaps most fondly remembered for his titular role in the 1985 classic Hakim Babu. His performance in the film was so iconic that "Hakim Babu" became his enduring moniker among audiences and industry peers alike. Beyond his extensive filmography, which includes notable titles like Punar Milana, Sesha Pratikhya, Megha Mukti, Devajani, Bata Abata, and Ashara Akasha, Das maintained a strong and active connection to his theatrical roots. He was a prominent figure in Manch Natak (stage plays) and frequently acted in television productions for Doordarshan. Tragically, his decades-long contribution to the arts came to an end when he passed away on September 13, 2020, due to complications related to COVID-19. His death was mourned as a tremendous loss to Odia cinema, though his legacy endures through his diverse and celebrated body of work.
