Shiva Shankar Manandhar (22 February 1932 – 14 November 2004) was a pioneering Nepali singer, music composer, and actor who made a lasting contribution to the development of modern Nepali music and cinema. Born in Pako, Newroad, Kathmandu, he began his professional career at Radio Nepal in May 1951 and remained closely associated with the institution for more than four decades, contributing as a singer, composer, mentor, and promoter of emerging musical talent. Over the course of his career, he composed music for around 1,200 Nepali songs and sang approximately 300 songs, working across themes including love, tragedy, devotion, patriotism, and social life. His innovative approach combined traditional Nepali and folk melodies with contemporary orchestral arrangements, helping advance the modernization of Nepali music while maintaining its distinctive cultural character. He composed for many leading Nepali singers and lyricists and played an important role in what is widely regarded as the Golden Age of Nepali music. From 1987 to 1991, he served as the Executive Director of Ratna Recording Corporation and retired from Radio Nepal in 1996. Manandhar also holds a historic place in Nepali cinema for portraying the leading character, Lahure Dai, in Aama (1964), the first Nepali feature film produced by the Government of Nepal. Although he did not pursue acting as a long-term profession, he contributed musically to several early Nepali films, including Aama, Manko Bandh, Kumari, Pachis Basanta, and Shantidip. His extensive contribution to Nepali music earned him numerous national awards and honors. Shiva Shankar Manandhar remains remembered as one of the important pioneers of modern Nepali music and as a significant early figure in the history of Nepali cinema.
