Christopher Ravenscroft (born 1946) is an English actor renowned for his extensive work in stage, film, and television, most notably for his portrayal of the principled Detective Inspector Mike Burden in the long-running ITV crime drama series The Ruth Rendell Mysteries (also known as The Inspector Wexford Mysteries), where he appeared opposite George Baker from 1987 to 2000. After earning a law degree from the University of London, Ravenscroft pursued acting and trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, launching a career that spanned theatre and screen.[1] His early stage work included multiple seasons with the Royal Shakespeare Company, where he played roles such as Cassius in Julius Caesar and Mountjoy in Henry V, the latter reprised in Kenneth Branagh's acclaimed 1989 film adaptation.[2][3] On television, beyond The Ruth Rendell Mysteries, he has guest-starred in series like Coronation Street (1978), Holby City, and The Crown, while his film credits include supporting roles in The Football Factory (2004) and The Man Who Knew Infinity (2015).Ravenscroft's performances often emphasize intellectual depth and restraint, contributing to his reputation as a versatile character actor in British drama.
