Wojciech Szczęsny Marczewski (born February 28, 1944 in Łódź) is a Polish film director and screenwriter, academic teacher, and recipient of the Officer's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta.
Initially, he collaborated with the Se-Ma-For Small Film Studio and the "Czołówka" Film Studio. Later, as part of the "Tor" Film Studio, he directed critically acclaimed films about growing up in oppressive systems: Nightmares (1978), set during the Kulturkampf era in the Prussian Partition, and Shivers (1981, FIPRESCI Award at the Berlin International Film Festival). His next film, Escape from the Liberty Cinema (1990), received the Golden Lion at the Gdańsk Polish Film Festival. Marczewski is also the author of Weiser (2000), based on the novel by Paweł Huelle, and a lecturer at the Andrzej Wajda Master School of Film Directing, founded in 2002. He has received numerous honorary awards, including from the Polish Filmmakers Association and the organizers of the Tarnów Film Awards. In 2024, he was honored with the Platinum Lions for lifetime achievement.
