I work at a call center making a graduation documentary. One ear to the phone, straining toward the past, the future, anywhere but here—calls find me: their voices, silences, sighs—worthless, discarded—passing through me into the partition as faint, indelible stains. Messages accumulate in a voicemail left unopened.
