Thérèse is the daughter of a modest couple. One day, she wins a voucher for two hundred thousand francs in a department store. Dazzled, the little typist chose a fur cape, much to her parents' disappointment. She has a fiancé, François, whom she now scorns a little. She returns to him, however, after an unfortunate foray into the big wide world, and gets rid of the cumbersome cape forever.

Françoise Marinier, a strong-willed young woman, won't accept a husband being forced on her. She left her family and moved to Paris, where she found work as a secretary for a fashionable artist, Edith Mars. The understanding Edith Mars encourages Françoise's budding love affair with an embassy attaché. Edith is the mistress of the Minister of Justice, and the Marinier parents arrive believing it's their daughter they're interviewing. While Mme Marinier puts up with it, her husband is scandalized. Gr ce to Edith, all confusion cleared up, the father is promoted to magistrate and Françoise marries.

A seemingly united family is suddenly shaken by the turmoil caused by the discovery of a letter from the father. He announces his intention to divorce. The children immediately mobilize to preserve the nest, they just manage to do so. The family building will be consolidated.
