A film adaptation of Selma Lagerlöf's classic book about Nils Holgersson, who is a real rascal. As punishment for his mischief, a house elf shrinks him to his size. The farm animals are out for revenge and so Nils must escape on the back of a goose from Skåne in the south to Lapland in the north. During his flight over Sweden, Nils gets to take part in many adventures.

Four Swedish volunteer soldiers are trapped in Russia. In front of them lies the front with enemy outposts and patrols, behind them the enemy minefields. Hope to return to their own lines decreases each day. Corpses of fallen, "dead of cold and hard as iron", forms the macabre landmarks in the winter landscape. Nearby is a burnt Russian village.

When the brothers get a good offer to borrow money for a hotel, they immediately take it. However, there is the shady contractor Gravenkop from whom they borrow the money. At the same time, people are smuggling into the city; cheap booze is in circulation. Sus, together with his friend Stille, tries to solve the crime.

The Finnish War 1808-1809 is over and Russia has conquered Finland from Sweden. All weapons in the country are meant to be handed over to the new ruler, but in some small places people are preparing for an uprising.
