A historical GDR review of the events of the November Revolution in Germany in 1918.

The artists Käthe Kollwitz, Otto Dix and Otto Nagel used different forms of expression, but had the same goal: fight against war, against exploitation and for the liberation of oppressed people.

Martin, the young protagonist of this hybrid documentary interspersed with staged scenes, is afraid of school, his father, and the future in general. He could perhaps talk to his mother, but he doesn't dare because of his poor school performance. Martin knows that he will have to repeat the year if things continue as they are.

Till Eulenspiegel works as a journeyman for a baker in Braunschweig who is not very kind to his staff or his customers. Now the master gets his comeuppance, because Till follows his employer's instructions all too literally, and instead of bread and rolls, there are only baked owls and guenons for sale in the morning.

Two sisters enter the fairy tale realm of Frau Holle and must prove their diligence and helpfulness. The good and hardworking girl receives a golden dress. The lazy sister is given a dress made of pitch for her bad services. The pitch will only come off her when she has overcome her laziness.

Two children, a boy and a girl, are each given a piggy bank. The boy is unimpressed and happily continues to spend his money. The girl takes every opportunity to "feed" her beautiful pig quite often. She is rewarded for this exemplary behavior with a ride to toyland.

In works like “Guide Dog Ruepel” (1962), Bärbl Bergmann was the first feature film director in the GDR to portray children in their often pitiless but also honest dealings with each other, something that was almost impossible in the documentary films of that period. But she also managed to sneak lessons on how to pursue educational goals with creative obstinacy into popular science films. Thus her educational piece about two boys who discover that magic, too, requires hard work, despite its rational approach, is far from disenchanting: The protagonists reach their conclusion via detours that take them through mysterious corridors, furtive looks through keyholes and bewitching dreams.
