Toughened criminal Jim Reagan tries to persuade his brother, Larry, to go straight, but Larry attempts to rob a banker, Richard Milton, and is arrested. Milton refuses to be lenient, and when Larry is killed trying to escape from prison, Jim and his wife, Molly, resolve to have vengeance.

Irene Martin, hoping to find fame as an opera singer, leaves her hometown for New York but ends up a chorus girl. She meets Henry Galt, a wealthy businessman, who asks her out on a date then sends her money the next day. Offended, she demands an apology, but Galt explains he often hires showgirls to entertain prospective clients on a strictly platonic basis. On those terms Irene accepts. Over time Galt falls in love with Irene and when he discovers her family has the impression she has become a fallen woman, marries her.

Diana Moreland, suspecting that her husband is cheating on her with Marilyn Foster, catches the two of them having a rendezvous at a roadhouse. Instead of screaming at them, she invites Marilyn back to her home. However, Diana has prepared a test to see just who it is that her husband really loves.

Corinna Endicott attends a wild party with her pal Spike Blaine and there becomes reacquainted with Rhodes Winston, an English writer whom she nursed in Europe. They spend more time together, and eventually they become engaged. Then Mitch Hardy, a married cad, entices Corinna to a roadhouse, which is raided by police while he is forcing his attentions on her. The newspapers ruin Corinna's reputation, Rhodes breaks their engagement, and Corinna refuses Spike's offer of marriage, fearing that he feels only pity for her. Corinna resolves to make up for her mistakes, however, and with Spike she starts a fresh air farm for slum children. Although Rhodes eventually reappears and insists that he needs Corinna for his inspiration, she refuses him in favor of Spike.

Two lovers in a small town in Maryland are torn apart by the Civil War--she is loyal to the south while he heads north to join the federal army, determined to protect the Union. Eventually his unit arrives in his hometown and he is reunited with his lover, but things aren't the way they used to be.
