The story of a group of young people who organise their own travelling symphony orchestra to provide music for people living in remote villages shortly after the war.

After her husband's suicide, young and beautiful Mitsuko Fuji feels alone and helpless -- until one of her husband's major creditors, Mr. Kito, offers a sympathetic ear and a cancellation of all debts. However, Mitsuko soon learns that Kito's intentions are anything but pure, as she's forced to become his personal concubine. Her only, improbable hope for redemption lies with her one true admirer: Kito's very own son.

Yuko has a rendezvous with her old boyfriend who has just returned to Tokyo. Blackmailers with evidence of this transgression force Yuko to work as a call girl to pay them. Yuko becomes the client of a foreigner who is in the employ of her husband, a prominent businessman.

Keiko and Toshiko are sisters who leave their mountain home, where their parents live in a hydroelectric plant company house to study in the city. They stay with their kind-hearted aunt and her jovial but heavy-drinking carpenter husband. Keiko, the 17-year-old eldest of five siblings, is gentle and responsible, while 14-year-old Toshiko is lively and childlike, affectionately called "Konchi."
