As 85-year-old President Lorenzo Snow struggles to vanquish the two million dollar indebtedness of the Mormon church in 1899, he feels inspired to journey from Salt Lake City by train and carriage to St. George in southern Utah. Along the way he witnesses the effects of severe drought. The next day, in the St. George Tabernacle, he receives inspiration that by paying tithing, the "windows of heaven" will open, pouring out blessings. He promises the people that they can plant crops and rain will come, then continues to preach tithing as he returns home where he awaits favorable weather reports from St. George.

Johnny explains that by paying eight cows he proved that she was worth more to him than any other woman on the island. He gave her a great gift, that of self-worth.

However, his own life is dominated by alcoholism, and he finds it difficult to hold a job and be a responsible member of the community. When Laura suddenly passes away, the children beg Uncle Ben to take care of them. He wishes to do so, and fights to gain custody of his young niece and nephews, but his addiction is standing in the way of his fulfilling the role of a parent.

Mike Miller is a high school student. His mother is wondering more and more about whether he is yet at that stage of acting on feelings associated with puberty, such as having kissed a girl. She is somewhat worried however when Mike says that he is going to hang out this evening with Hal and Blaine, who she has only heard by reputation are a bit on the wild side. While she doesn't forbid Mike from hanging out with them, she still can't help but be worried. On the flip side, Mike, a proverbial good boy, may buckle under peer pressure to do things that he may not want to do, such as drag racing, drinking and hanging out with "wild" girls. What Mike does not know is that some of his friends and friends of friends who he will hang out with this evening will have exactly those same feelings as him, they too who may succumb to peer pressure.

Marilyn's divorced roommate Esther (who is attending a class on marriage), advises finding common interests, but Doug finds Marilyn's modern dancing dull, and she feels the same way about his fishing. Perhaps more importantly, Marilyn wants a career as well as children and Doug thinks raising a family is a full-time occupation for a wife.
