This five part epic war drama gives a dramatized detailed account of Soviet Union's war against Nazi Germany during world war two. Each of the five parts represents a separate major eastern front campaign.

Five Days, Five Nights (Fünf Tage, Fünf Nächte) takes place in Dresden in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War. While Dresden is in ruins, over two thousand paintings by artists including Rembrandt, Raphael, Rubens, Giorgione, and Vermeer have disappeared from the city’s Old Masters Picture Gallery. In 1960, 400,000 farmers are forced to join the LPG. After the forced collectivization, Thomas, son of the experienced LPG chairman Rothardt, is delegated to the Oderbruch. However, he is unable to cope with the unwilling farmers in the countryside and his task of improving their work. He meets with incomprehension from his father and a conflict arises between the two.

Young Elisabeth goes on a country trip with her mother, her friends Reinhard and Erich, their parents and the pastor. While the adults prepare a picnic lunch, the three youngest members of the group are asked to look for berries for dessert. The dutiful Erich eagerly collects them, while Elisabeth and Reinhard set off together in search of fruit. They find a hiding place they had built years ago. Although they still love each other, Elisabeth is sad. Reinhard will leave the next day to study in another city and will only visit her rarely. She doesn't know how she will go on living without him. She picks him a water lily as a memento and he gives her a goldfinch in a cage.

On August 12, 1961, eight people in three cars set off for Berlin from Leipzig. They want to go to the West. The initiator is the philistine Spiessack, who drives the others, who have embarked on the adventure with mixed feelings. It becomes a journey with numerous incidents and panic, which causes the different characters to clash. When they finally arrive in Berlin the next day, they are not allowed to cross the border. The only option is to return. At home, Spiessack is met by a policeman in his living room - with the slogan "We'll be back" written on the wall.
