A brothel in a small Hungarian town becomes the home of a medical student after his favorite working girls find out he's out of rent money. Trouble brews as they learn his mother is coming for a visit and they must transform the house.

The film is made up of two independent episodes, which only have the basic setting in common. The little schoolteacher in Free Saturday, when she wakes up in a hotel room with 100 marks in her handbag, invents the "quickest way" to get to her flat. The newlyweds in The Council Fairy Tale find the "surest way" to an apartment by moving into the council building. There is no doubt then, what is the common default position, the impossibility of getting an apartment...

A group of landless Hungarian peasants accept work as migrant-laborers on a farm in northern Germany where the wages are good, and the wives and family are allowed to accompany them. Though it is in the midst of World War II, they are relatively well-off. However, they glimpse the treatment accorded to POWs and others who are not so gently treated, and at the conclusion of the year's harvest, they choose to return to Hungary and are quickly swept up in the tides of war. This film is part of a series of films by award-winning, well-respected director Zoltan Fabri who devoted much time and effort chronicling the struggle against fascism.

After the World War I, enthusiastic young people found the intellectual group of Hungarian Communist Party. Both parties take the field for their ideas and the battle starts.

The film is a story of parallel biographies. In 1944, three generations of a Jewish family of pharmacists live in a small Hungarian town. Eva, the 13-year-old granddaughter, keeps a diary and reads Dickens' Copperfield's David. From time to time, the hero of the novel appears in her life, or Eva enters the world of the novel. First, Eve's cousin is taken away. Then Eva's mother and her boyfriend arrive from Pest. They seize Grandpa's shop, arrest her father, and the ordeal doesn't end there...

1918. Fábián Bálint is forced to kill humans on the Italian front. At home his sons drown the priest, the lover of their mother, in the river Kraszna. Mrs. Fábián turns insane. Following his arrival home Bálint becomes the liveried coachman of the baron.
