The consumer society is dead. Welcome to the preservation society! As of their first school year, children are taught to love objects, which most of them do. But not all citizens. To remedy the problem, The security forces crack down on vandals, bands of protesters and other iconoclasts. And for greater efficiency the States uses the services of Kief, a mad scientist who operates on prisoners so as to pair them with totem-objects. Which is why Judith gets wrinkles when her clothes are creased. Which is why the skin of librarian Mikoski gets pierced with holes whenever rats gnaw at his books.

Story of three "flights": a little boy, a girl, and a mother who escapes the real world and recreates the world through dreams and photographs.

In an antiquarian, a man buys a leather-bound blank book to use as diary. Once home, he finds the book has started writing itself - with Chapter I detailing everything that happened to him, including the book starting to write itself.

Georges Gauthier, the young vicar of a small village in the North of France, experiencing the emptiness of his ministry, decides the follow the local youngsters, who almost all go to town to find work there. To go on being with the vital forces of his village, he decides to take a job of a steelworker. Georges settles down in a suburb, sharing an apartment with a priest-worker, older than him. What he hopes is to give a new meaning to his vocation by living the same life as the workers of a steel plant...
