Newly appointed parish priest Giemza sets off for a rural parish, but a chance encounter with a young farmer leads to a bizarre case of mistaken identity. Soon, the two men become caught up in a series of increasingly surreal adventures involving villagers, church officials, hunters and a mysterious convent, blurring the line between reality, folklore and dreams.

Jan and Maria become a couple in 1930s Kraków. Jan tries to get a job as an architect but fails. They struggle with poverty and extreme humiliation. Their attempt to survive leads to a desperate crime.

He becomes involved with Karolina, who is older than him, becomes the lover of Zula, his employer's wife, and develops deep feelings for the beautiful and sensitive Blanka. Ryszard cannot find his place and ends up alone. Finally, he decides to take advantage of the amnesty decree and reveal himself.
