An American billionaire's daughter is obsessed with the idea of marrying a count. Her father would prefer her to marry the son of a competitor. So he comes up with the idea of hiring the dashing Heinz to spoil her aristocratic ways. Heinz introduces himself to her as Count Rüttow-Mallwitz and takes her to Europe. There, the two fall in love, but when she finds out about the scam, she indignantly takes the next ship and returns to America. It is only on the crossing that Heinz manages to convince her that he really loves her

The story follows a movie crew who is filming a musical in a small and idyllic alpine village. After their temperamental leading lady drops out of the film, they decide to replace her with the village's young post office clerk Gretl, who returns to Berlin with them. There she has to struggle with the movie's all-male crew, who all try to woo and win her.

The story is set in Berlin at the beginning of the 20th century. The members of a singing group live in poor conditions in a dilapidated building. When the manager of the property is murdered, Peter and Paul, both members of the singing group, become suspects in the murder. When they return from a performance, the police are waiting for them to take them in for questioning. Since Paul is the most likely perpetrator according to the investigation, he is arrested immediately.
