Sixpack Film

Iris, a 28-year-old studentin a big city, recently left by her boyfriend and too poor to pay her rent, begins to work for a strange old man. He wants Iris to precisely describe the trivial belongings of a dead woman, packed in white boxes, to keep the memory of the woman alive. Iris is disgusted and fascinated at the same time; reflecting on an invisible person's traces, she slowly becomes aware of her own wounds.

Picture Perfect Pyramid is a 16mm film which in counter-clockwise spirals, circles a large pyramid structure that was built on the outskirts of Vienna in 1983. Using twenty-four positions the film was shot over the course of an entire day, with one shot per hour. The camera moves continuously and almost imperceptibly, covering the surrounding area while the landmark remains centered in the frame. Today the building, a former indoor swimming pool, serves as a venue for various events; from right wing party gatherings to an erotic fair that presents a live show with lights visible even from the outside of the pyramid. In filming the building, a structural approach focused on geometry was used in order to achieve less subjectively motivated images.

In 1833, mathematician Simon von Stampfer introduced the stroboscopic disc in Vienna—one of the earliest cinema prototypes. The discs feature all forms of animation: abstract and narrative, documentary and (quite literally!) experimental. This film is based on images from Stampfer’s discs.

Many Irish women view their involvement in the Northern Ireland conflict—the Troubles—as an emancipatory endeavor. Sometimes acting independently of the men, they built bombs, went on hunger strikes, smuggled weapons, and served prison sentences. In Friederike Berat and Ulrike Ertl’s interview film, which features both pro-British unionists and pro-Irish republicans, everyone is aware of the power of that brief, albeit turbulent, freedom.
