In the spring of 1905, the water conduit project in the Canadian city of Canitoga is set to be completed. For years, the completion had been marred by sabotage. Engineer Oliver Montstuart commands the last blasting operation. But again, the explosive charge is too large and thus, further construction is forestalled again. When Montstuart confronts foreman Westbrook, the foreman threatens him with a knife. In self-defence, Montstuart shoots him. Now, he has to flee.

Mathilde is a fresh young girl who wants nothing more than to become like her adored mother Maria, Mathilde insists that she is supposed to be a great, important singer, but unfortunately, due to her numerous artistic commitments, she does not have the time to take care of her daughter’s upbringing.

This question is answered in the film, which was made in 1960 on the occasion of the visit of 25 employees of the Iranian postal administration to Germany . The camera accompanies Zohre Hesami on her big journey, during her training at the Deutsche Bundespost, visiting Hamburg, Frankfurt and finally to Munich, where a stroll through the city and a concert are also on the agenda.

Youth without families and perspectives still wander Germany five years after the war ended. "Back to Life" shows some of the efforts to reintegrate them into society.
