Four people talk about aspects of their work. A flight attendant on a 747 shows us some of what's involved in getting the cabin ready for the next flight. A man in a hardhat discusses the capacity of a huge steam shovel shaped like a wheel, as it turns and moves earth in the background. A man who sells room furnishings talks about trying to make advertising fliers. A cemetery manager describes burial options. All are cheerful.

Alerik, a dreamy 16-year-old boy, lives with his grandfather in a country that is at war. When the old man is killed in a bomb attack, Alerik becomes obsessed by the wish to take revenge. From now on, the war has him firmly in its clutches.

The film follows Ibro (Emir Hadžihafizbegović) and his son Armin (Armin Omerović), who travel from a small town in Bosnia to a film audition in Zagreb, hoping to land a part for Armin in a German film about the war in Bosnia. On their way to fulfilling the boy's dream, they encounter a series of disappointing setbacks — their bus to Zagreb breaks down and they are late for the audition. After Ibro convinces the director to give the boy a second chance, they soon realize that Armin is too old for the part anyway. As it becomes obvious that Armin's dream of playing a part in the movie will never happen, he feels increasingly disheartened, while Ibro's determination to help his son grows. Finally they do get another chance, but Armin buckles under the pressure and experiences an epileptic seizure. As they get ready to head back to Bosnia, the film crew makes an unexpected offer, but when Ibro refuses, Armin at last realizes how much his father really loves him.

Photography student Vu has just arrived from Vietnam's backwaters and is immediately attracted to his handsome roommate Thang, who works odd jobs as a bouncer and low-level drug dealer. Entranced by the nocturnal rhythms of Thang's world, Vu follows him around the city where he meets Van, a ballet-cum-exotic dancer and Thang's sometimes-girlfriend.
