Deputy Sheriff Lou Ford is a pillar of the community in his small west Texas town, patient and apparently thoughtful. Some people think he is a little slow and maybe boring, but that is the worst they say about him. But then nobody knows about what Lou calls his "sickness": He is a brilliant, but disturbed sociopathic sadist.

Somewhere in Sweden, a gigantic dumpster breaks free from a heavy chain suspended underneath a big helicopter. The dumpster hits the ground with a formidable crash and the garbage spouts out into the surroundings. Swedish efficiency researchers come to Norway for a study of Norwegian men, to optimize their use of their kitchen. Folke Nilsson (Tomas Norström) is assigned to study the habits of Isak Bjørvik (Joachim Calmeyer). By the rules of the research institute, Folke has to sit on an umpire's chair in Isak's kitchen and observe him from there, but never talk to him. Isak stops using his kitchen and observes Folke through a hole in the ceiling instead. However, the two lonely men slowly overcome the initial post-war Norwegian-Swede distrust and become friends.

Inside the tower, something whizzes by and Laban lets out a terrible scream as he rushes out. On his head is a small furry bundle. Bus carefully removes it and places the little tangled bundle in Laban's hands. It slowly unfolds itself. It's a baby bat! Taking care of a little bat isn't so easy; no matter what they do, the little creature doesn't look very happy. But then they come up with something they have to try, even though it means staying out in the middle of the night.

Tall Uncle is afraid of ghosts and doesn't dare to watch the movies even though Little Anna says they aren't scary. Tall Uncle finally understands that the movies aren't scary and then dares to go see them.
