German terrorists kidnap the crew of an aeroplane as they leave the airport. The terrorists demand the release of two of their colleagues, who are to be extradited to the USA. The father of one of the stewardesses decides he can no longer wait for diplomacy, and so flies out to Germany. There, frustration leads him to hire a former SAS counter-terrorism expert. Together they hunt down the terrorists.

The film follows a laid-back private investigator Kyd Thomas who gets thrust into Hollywood's world of crime after he meets Laura Cassidy. Laura is a cocaine addict who Kyd saves from being beaten and raped.

The Messenger of Death has an interesting way of getting victims. His assistant, Miss Smith, would write a letter where recipients would be told to pass it along. The person that failed in doing so would meet misfortune (mostly death). The Messenger of Death and Miss Smith would watch the person that broke the chain on a television monitor. After the victim's demise, The Messenger of Death would go back to his desk, and say to his assistant, "Take a letter, Miss Smith".
