Apprentice Lapitch, the little shoemaker sets off on a journey after experiencing injustice from the cruel Master Mrkonja. On his journey he meets Gita, a beautiful little circus girl who is an orphan just like him. They share adventures and experience problems during their journey. They have nowhere to sleep, no food and are poorly clothed, but nothing scares them. They are bold and happy, willing to help everyone. On the night of the full moon something terrible happens, and changes everything...

The Jesuits send a new member of their order, a young priest named Father Had, to the court of the wealthy Countess Maria, in order to convince her to turn her wealth and land away to the order. Had is conflicted about this and his doubts further increase after his relationship with Maria becomes romantic in nature.

Serafin Skoko grew up on a lonely lighthouse island off of the coast of the Adriatic Sea, with nothing more than birds, the sea and the rocks to keep him company and with his parents constant arguing being the only inkling of human contact. After he reaches adulthood, desperately seeking a way out of his monotony, he enlists into the Austro-Hunagarian army and is stationed in a small continental Croatian town, where he falls in love with Crvena, a beautiful local spendthrift. However, as the shadows of the First World War begin closing in over Europe, he decides to fake insanity in order to avoid military service and is put through the horrors of his homecountry's mental insititutions.
