Ignacio is known as El Iluminado de la Esmeralda (The Enlightened One of the Emerald) for his healing powers. Urged by the eviction of the house where he lives, he decides to charge for his services with an illusionist. What he ends up with is being mistreated and taken advantage of by others, even ending up in jail. After regaining his freedom, he goes mad.

Through the testimony of Manuel Taborda, a pioneer of labor organizing in Venezuela’s oil fields, this documentary revisits the experiences of oil workers between 1920 and 1936. Their memories reveal a world marked by corporal punishment, exploitation, racial segregation, and disease, alongside the emergence of collective resistance against the American and British oil companies that controlled the industry and the government that enabled them.

Migrants from the countryside and unemployed people from neighbouring cities take over some unused land and establish a neighbourhood in the industrial zone of Maracay. The event coincides with a presidential election campaign, which motivates political demonstrations in that town.
