In Ceylon, American Babs Lincoln, daughter of US Ambassador Jefferson Lincoln, is kidnapped. At the same time, an employee of the US Embassy in Colombo is murdered. The crimes bring Joe Louis Walker, alias Inspector X, and Tom Rowland onto the scene, who quickly realize that the cases are connected.

Finally, a poet sums it all up by talking about his commitment to the service of mankind.

Hervé Montagne, a famous but awfully self-satisfied playwright, is furious when he learns that the actress signed to lead in his latest play will not be able to play the part on account of pregnancy. All the more as no other great actress is available. Well, in fact there IS one, Gabrielle Tristan, a great name of the French stage.
