It is the early afternoon of a summer day in the 1990s. While their parents are asleep, Lotti and Malibù (nicknames the sisters use for each other) decide to sneak out to a local bar—a spot frequented by the boy they both have a crush on. Puca, the youngest, insists on coming along, threatening to wake their parents with her screaming if they refuse. The three girls set off; as they pass the beach, Puca wanders toward the water’s edge and claims to have seen a mermaid. Once at the bar, the older sisters—preoccupied with their adolescent moods—lose sight of Puca. A search ensues, leading to a confrontation that clears the air between them, followed by a fleeting glimpse of the mermaid diving and vanishing beneath the waves; that image makes them realize their childhood is gone forever. The unexpected happens when they return home to alert their parents…

Three months in the life of Chiara, an actress pushing forty and trying to find her way in a bustling Rome overrun by tourists. Invisible, precarious, Chiara restlessly piles up one experience after another, searching for the thing that will make her feel alive.
In the Venetian lagoon, to board boats and ferries, one must first take a few steps onto a floating platform called an imbarcadero. In Chioggia, near Venice, among the many docking points, there lives an imbarcadero much like the others. But this one has a problem. It has been abandoned and for far too long, no one has walked upon it. No foot deigns to tread on it, and even more importantly, all the boats ignore it. There was just one boat that, once upon a time, made it wobble. Theirs wasn’t exactly a love story. It was more like a dance, a game of chase, a recognizing and ignoring. It wasn’t even a real infatuation. In the murky sea and the placid lagoon, what this imbarcadero experienced was a simple, overpowering crush.
Moving from your homeland to another country is no less risky than an astronaut’s first step into outer space.
