A short film portrays the events of a depressed man's day, culminating, presumably, in his suicide, though the ending is ambiguous. Afterwards, a roundtable of mental hygiene professionals and social workers examine the film, while discussing the phenomenon of suicide more broadly.

Case study documenting a patient’s treatment for paranoid schizophrenia. Made for health professionals, Mental Hospital shows daily life at the state facility, including hydrotherapy and electroconvulsive therapy sessions. The film ends with the patient’s discharge.

"This film presents a non-verbal, fast-moving, sometimes humorous montage of just about every kind of musical form, from solo musicians to rock groups, bluegrass bands, symphony orchestras, and a chamber quartet" (US National Archives). The film was made as part of the "Young Filmmaker Bicentennial Grant" program managed by the US Information Agency in the lead up to the American Bicentennial.
