But after talking to the eccentric locals -- including a shy video store clerk and a corrupt police officer -- Erik finds a woman who is not at all like the girl he left behind. Emma, a young author, goes to see Erik, the publishing editor whom she's sent her debut novel. Their meeting leads to a love affair. The middle-aged Erik leaves his wife. What Erik doesn't know is that Emma recently began a relationship with the dramatist Stefan, whose play is also being published by Erik's company. One day Stefan overdoses and is brought to the emergency ward where Erik's wife Ann works as a doctor. These incident is the start of the story about how four people's lives are crossed during ten years, until the four of them finally end up in the same loneliness they started.

Two brothers, Sten and Jonas, own and live on a farm near Ätran in Falkenberg. Sten has just been released from prison but continues his shady business dealings, which now include a large stock of fine cognac. Jonas tries to put a stop to this but has to agree to play Sten's wife for a day in order to trick the person who is going to buy the smuggled alcohol. It turns out that Jonas has invited two summer guests to rent the chicken coop for a week, the young woman Anna and her father Göte . Jonas falls in love with Anna, and everything becomes even more confusing when the completely idiotic neighbor Ivar Rask understands everything in his own way.
