On the last days of his life, while succumbing to alcoholism in a hospital, famed writer Lima Barreto chronicles his trajectory story as a black, poor writer living in Brazilian society between monarchy's dying days and early years of republic with its countless social problems, which formed the basis of his many novels.

The film narrates the imaginary encounter between João Cândido, leader of Revolta da Chibata and a paper picker and writer Carolina Maria de Jesus, author of the book "Quarto de despejo", in Rio de Janeiro.

Through testimonies, the documentary recalls the enormous process of removal of favelas that took place in the south of Rio de Janeiro in the 1960s and 1970s.
