Although Katrina admits her crime, Marshal von Trump plans to execute Roalf in order to pacify the Austranians. Katrina appeals to Ludwig, who pardons Roalf over the advice of his counselors causing Austrania to declare war. A crucial battle is fought near the Ardelheim inn, during which Katrina becomes a heroine by signaling the advance of Ludwig's troops.

Denton and the girl are mutually attracted and to Denton comes a vague but haunting belief that they have met before. Worn out by overstudy, he becomes seriously ill with rain fever and the mind pictures he has of his fair neighbor fade into a vision of a prehistoric existence, where he wanders as a stone age savage, meets and loves the girl of his heart, who also lives in that strange world. There also is the conflict between wealth and poverty, the father's choice opposed to the daughter's. The prehistoric Denton finally wins out after struggling with a savage rival and wild beasts as well. Just so the modern Denton finally conquers over his modem rival.

The latter restores them to the Marquis, who decides to allocate old Stamply with the use of a corner of his manor. Hélène de la Seiglière, the Marquis's daughter, takes care of the old man. But this one, devastated by death of his son, buried under the ice of the Berezina, dies. Some time later, three persons come to live in the manor: M. de Paubert, his son Raoul, and Destournelles, a crafty, ruthlessly ambitious lawyer. De Paubert hopes to marry his son to Hélène de la Seiglière and might well achieve his aim but for the unexpected return of Bernard Stamply, who has escaped death miraculously. He gets to know Helène and the two young people fall in love with each other.
