A group of young people are attacked by a tragedy from a video that a young man borrowed from a rental video shop. The horrific scenes from the video become a reality for the young man and his friends. The elite staff of director Shunji Iwai have gathered to create an entirely new psycho-horror movie that is finally born here.

Ichikawa Hajime (a.k.a. Ping), a fisherman, is a single-minded man of the sea. He was only interested in fish and women, but at the request of a classmate, he agreed to support the city council election. Rokuda, on the other hand, has fled to this fishing town from an assassin to cover his mouth in a corruption case. Their encounter sets off a bomb in the world of politics and the yakuza.

On June 19, 1948, the bodies of Japanese novelist and short-story writer Osamu Dazai and his lover Tomie Yamazaki are found drowned in the Tamagawa Canal in Tokyo. Osamu Dazai previously attempted to take his own life at least three other times. During the post war period, Osamu Dazai's reached the reached the height of his popularity and he became the literary voice for a "lost generation." After their bodies are found people wondered if Tomie Yamazaki was the cause of Osamu Dazai's death.
