A duel between two master swordsmen for the hand of a beautiful young maiden leads to a 20-year-old grudge that proves deadly. One of the swordsmen’s, Pai Fukuo’s, son is kidnapped and raised by the rival swordsman, who tell him his real parents were murdered by Pai Fukuo. The child grows up and seeks revenge on Pai Fukuo, whom he believes has murdered his “real” parents, not knowing that Pai Fukuo is his true father. A modern swordplay reinterpretation of the Wang Yu classic One-Armed Swordsman.

In the snowy countryside of northern China, Wen receives a telegram informing her that her father is dead. She travels to the city and finds he was branded a reactionary in the midst of the Cultural Revolution. She is distraught, and on the way home, she is harassed and attacked by thugs, but she stays in the home of a kind-hearted doctor.

In a fierce battle against the British invasion, the commander of the Chinese army sacrifices his life on the line of duty. The British celebrate their victory by hanging his head out on a conquered fortress. To end such humiliation, the commander's daughter seeks help from the leader of the local rebels, Benjamin. Their attempts to steal the head enrage the British. The British conceal the head in one of a dozen identical boxes, and gather intelligence on Benjamin's moves from a spy who disguises as a priest. Knowing little about the modern warfare, the rebels are frustrated by their well armed counterpart in several bloody confrontations. Benjamin resorts to ambush the British commanders in a forest and the explosive final attack is launched.
