Planter Middleton of Kentucky has two beautiful daughters, "Tempest," and "Sunshine," because of their different dispositions. "Sunshine" loves Dr. Lacey of New Orleans but is wooed by village postmaster Bill Jeffreys, who she rejects when he proposes. Soon after the Dr. & Sunshine become engaged, he is compelled to return to his home city. During his absence, "Tempest," who loves him, conspires with Bill Jeffreys to intercept the lovers' letters making the pair doubt each other. The Doctor decides to marry "Tempest” while Sunshine is brokenhearted. Just as Tempest and the Doctor are about to be married, the ceremony is interrupted by Jeffreys, who confesses the plot, and the lovers reunited.

Oklahoma lawyer Al Jennings, whose father was a famous and respected judge, is enraged at the murder of his brother Ed, shot in the back by two killers. As if that wasn't enough, he finds himself falsely accused of robbery, and while escaping those phony charges he is chased and shot by a posse. Although wounded, he manages to elude the posse but takes his revenge by robbing a country store. It's not long before he has his own outlaw gang, with headquarters at the Spike S Ranch. John Gary, a hotel owner, who wants to revitalize his business. After reading about a reported mermaid sighting, he has his daughter Ethel pose as a mermaid and gets a newspaper reporter to witness and photograph the mermaid. The publicity results in the hotel becoming famous, but Ethel eventually discloses the joke to the guests of the hotel in her mermaid suit.

This adaptation of the Alexandre Dumas story tells of a man, living in the present day, who returns home incognito and wealthy after having been a sailor for years and living on a desert island surrounded by water filled with pearl-oysters. He revenges himself on his enemy, who had unjustly accused him of a crime he did not commit.
