In different parts of rural China, various people explore what makes their communities unique.

Woody, a man disheartened by setbacks in both his career and love life, chooses to return to his hometown in a bout of depression. This "sudden" return disrupts the tranquil life of his family, as he not only has to navigate close quarters with relatives but also seek out new possibilities for his future. After numerous rejections in reality, a chance encounter with his high school classmate, Feng Liuliu, leads to unexpected changes in his life.

Humble, unassuming Ma and timid Cao have been cast off by their families and forced into an arranged marriage. They have to combine their strength and build a home to survive. In the face of much adversity, an unexpected bond begins to blossom, as both Ma and Cao, uniting with Earth's cycles, create a haven for themselves in which they can thrive.

An exhausted woman rekindles the spirit of a man, whose heart has grown cold and desolate. Together, they embark on a journey of both physical and emotional liberation, bound tightly by desire and passion, navigating through an intense exploration of life and death.

The story chronicles four decades in the lives of a family deeply rooted in the soil of Northeast China.
