During the German and Romanian invasion of Soviet Union in 1941, Italian writer Curzio Malaparte arrives in Iași to treat a severe allergy. Finding himself in a desperate situation, he tries to find a Jewish doctor, but soon discovers evidence of a devastating pogrom against the Jewish community. Seeking help in the midst of a city plunged in terror and confusion, Malaparte begins to uncover the horrors of an oppressive regime, in an atmosphere marked by indifference and hidden secrets.

Karcsi, a Roma policeman, lives with Eva, a Swede. One day he is called to the scene of the murder of a wealthy trafficker named Schulter. For he is a gypsy, who despite being adopted and raised by "regular" Hungarians, has his nose rubbed in his minority status every day. The film, which is based on the novel by Ákos Kertész, is a shrewd genre work full of dusky humour and surreal situations. Tabló follows a vivid succession of strange images that eventually lead to the emergence of the central story about a charismatic police officer on a tireless quest for the truth, though he must fight against virtually everyone and is just as fallible as the next person. Tabló makes a statement on the issue of race and racism - or, indeed, relations between any minority and majority.

Housewife Katalin Munk has her world torn apart when her lecturer husband János arrives home to tell her that he’s leaving her for a younger student of his. In November 1956, many people fled to Tito in Yugoslavia and were confronted with socialism, which they called "man-faced". The film's heroes find temporary refuge on a Bunyevac farmer's farm and await their fate there, as well as in nearby Subotica, in a long-simmering family and social environment, under the supervision of local internal security officers. One of them, a participant in the 1942 massacre in Baška, later a carpenter, now posing as a revolutionary, tries to blackmail his host with old memories. A naive young man of faith tries to clear up the gendarme's past, his son, a Stalinist, and his role in the revolution, as does the penitent intellectual.
