A young Kyrgyz immigrant tries to eke out a living in Moscow after abandoning her newborn and fleeing the hospital.

While Nazira finds it increasing difficult to conceal her love for Iskander by means of her unconventional behaviour, Iskander is evidently not only crazy about Baikonur and the vastness of outer space, but also deeply smitten with the beautiful French astronaut Julie Mahé, whose journey to the stars he wistfully follows on television.

While the district administration prepares for the arrival of high-ranking guests, local alcoholic Sadyq Ospanovich solves intergalactic problems. Two large-scale events, developing simultaneously, lead to an inevitable conflict. The life-weary saleswoman Nadezhda and the naive policeman Baur find themselves between two fires.

"Makarov" both a popular Russian name, and also slang for the word "gun," serves as a metaphor for the brutal reality of life in a post-totalitarian society. The story's protagonist, Makarov, embodies this struggle as he becomes more mechanical and less spiritual upon acquiring a gun.
