Single, unemployed and with nothing to lose, Anton accepts an offer to start working in an illegal coal mine. When his colleague is buried underground in an accident, Anton finds a replacement in the face of Hristo, 28, a young local Roma. The two men quickly bond, until the mob boss Tzetzo finds out that they've been hiding things from him. And in this town, some secrets better remain buried.

Mammoth Pictures has inked a deal out of Cannes with the Bulgarian production company Bazuka to exclusively develop and produce a narrative feature take on the cultural tradition spotlighted in Kukeri, their documentary short produced for The New Yorker.

Once a year, the Bulgarian tradition of Kukeri unites a small village as residents wear intricate masks and costumes and dance at night. Killian Lassablière chronicles the practice in his short documentary.
