The setting is Central Asia during the Russian civil war. In the post-revolutionary twenties, when the power in European Russia was (officially) "fully in the hands of the workers and peasants", but the fight against the Basmachi rebels was in full swing. When a Red Army detachment captures Sultan Mazar, the brains behind the Bazmachi contingent, a decision is made to escort urgently the prisoner to the Bukhara province. The difficult mission is entrusted to a grizzled mountain trapper and conscientious revolutionary called Mirzo. His expertise is essential to traverse the precarious paths and steep mountain ridges along the way, impossible terrain for the inexperienced. A group consisting of Mirzo, his brother Kova, the Sultan, his daughter Zaranghis and slave Saifulla set off on this journey. They are forced to fight on the mountain ridges as well as negotiate the natural dangers and harsh elements.

In the besieged town of Khojent, famine begins. The leaders of the revolutionary committee, Kozyrev, Sattar, and Alim, with the help of the chief mullah of the mosque, Abdulrahman-khan, win over the local residents, defeat a group of bandits, and bring back bread to the starving people.

It tells the story of Zahhak, the ruler of the Kingdom of Snakes, who, through cunning and deception, conquers a neighboring state and establishes the cult of the Snake Goddess. Zahhak has two snakes growing from his shoulders that feed on human brains. Each day, a dancer, a devotee of the cult, performs a snake dance in the city square. The person she kisses during her performance is doomed to be sacrificed to the snakes.

Student Malika studies at one of the universities in Dushanbe. Her hobby is field hockey, and she is the center of attack for the Sogdiana women's team. One day, Malika meets Said, who studied at the University of Bombay, where the young man, it turns out, learned not only the humanities, but also the game of field hockey, kung fu techniques, and even the secrets of the skill of Indian dancers.
