Isaac Rubinchik, like a biblical old man who has lived a long and dramatic life, feels the need for moral reflection on his experiences. Disputes with long-dead relatives, a glance into the future, which he sees in the ruins of civilization - all these memories and fears make Rubinchik reevaluate many things and bring closer the moment of his spiritual epiphany.

Anya is brought up in an orphanage, she has been in the school of ballroom dancing. She falls in love with the head of school, who is much older than her. After a quarrel with him Anya throws the newly born child in the hospital and goes to the village where settles in an abandoned house. Her peer Sanya, who secretly and hopelessly in love with Anya, leaves the children's home together with her. At first, he seems to be a child, unable to take a serious and responsible decisions, but gradually Anya sees that he grows up and falls in love with him.

A day in the life of a mother and her daughter, who have already reached a stage in life where their age difference is barely noticeable. One day, the two are visited by a young official who quite unwittingly makes the mother feel young again, and so she decides to set out for a walk by the river together with her daughter. It becomes increasingly clear to both of them that the best days of their lives are past and that they make a ludicrous impression wherever they go. However, they somehow keep their spirits up and try to enjoy this last walk together. They both know that this is the very last of the ‘grand days’ of their lives.
