In 1924, Oskar Matzerath is born in the Free City of Danzig. At age three, he falls down a flight of stairs and stops growing. In 1939, World War II breaks out.

This loosely plotted coming-of-age tale follows the life of 15-year-old Laurent Chevalier as he stumbles his way over the burgeoning swell of adolescence in 1950s France. After having his first sexual experience with a prostitute and dodging the lips of a priest, Chevalier contracts a case of scarlet fever. When the fever leaves him with a heart murmur, Chevalier is placed in a sanatorium, along with his over-attentive and adulterous mother.

The young Marion is arrested by the police for pimping, prostitution and indecent exposure. Reporter Axel Rottmann sense a lucrative story for his newspaper. He makes a deal with Marion, to tell her story.

Bernhard "Big Mäc" Maurer, an ex-motorcycle freak and bored piano teacher, is voted the "perfect motorcyclist" by the trade magazine Motorrad after quitting his job as a music teacher at a Munich high school. He is promised a bonus of $50,000 if he manages to beat a Japanese team in an adventure rally from the Zugspitze to Kilimanjaro. Maurer agrees and chooses as his second man, the technician, his young neighbor Max. Max, for whom an apprenticeship is at stake, injures himself shortly before the start of the rally and has to sit out. Without Maurer's knowledge, Max's almost identical-looking sister Maxi takes over the role of the boy.

Pepe Nietnagel and his fellow students of the Mommsen school come up with all kinds of ideas to get out of doing any actual school work. This includes simulating suicides, setting off the air-raid sirens and abusing the school director's new broadcasting system. They succeed in sending their teacher to a sanatorium and get a replacement that turns out to not be so bad after all.

Due to a plot by the teaching staff, headmaster Taft is forced into early retirement and Knörz is appointed headmaster. However, they didn't count on class 13a, and especially not on their spokesperson Pepe Nietnagel. They are anything but happy about losing Taft, their favorite enemy. Without further ado, Pepe and his friends join forces with Taft and hatch a series of daring pranks to get back at Knörz.

A US agent is supposed to find out details about a missile base in Siberia. The mission fails, although the American remains alive thanks to the help of a Russian woman.
