Clearing the sea of lignite, miners move excavators from one colossal mass to the next, which they strip. They float with dreamlike ease, like lost ships in the sweltering heat of the summer of '94 through Lusatia to the Welzow/Süd open-cast mine. Next to it lies the village of Kausche. It has to go, because the coal still lies beneath Kausche.

The history of Baden-Württemberg begins in 1952 with an imposed fusion. In 1956, opponents of the merger have organized themselves to the point that a referendum is to reverse the decision after the fact. The referendum does not take place until 1970 with a turnout of 62.5% and ends with a vote in favor of the merger of 81.9%. The example of the Baden-Württemberg fusion is used to illustrate how such a fusion takes place, how conflicts are settled, and what the final outcome is.

Unusual camera angles and eyewitness accounts of the planning and construction process capture the spirit of the early GDR and the idea of socialist urban planning and architecture. The "National Development Program Berlin" envisaged Stalinallee as the focal point of a district of residential and high-rise buildings and as a model for the architecture and urban planning of the capital. The section of road between Strausberger Platz and Frankfurter Tor is considered the beginning of the construction of the "socialist capital of Germany - Berlin" and was designed in the style of socialist classicism, the so-called "Zuckerbäckerstil", by the architects Hermann Henselmann, Hanns Hopp.

Caroline does not remember living in a time of peace; she has been a young child when the "troubles" in Belfast started. During the 25 years during which the war lasted, she got married and raised three children; and only a few weeks before the ceasefire started she was killed. Since the ceasefire, the situation in Northern Ireland has not changed much: the fear to talk is as big as ever before.
