Nina, a young activist, is selling her family home, which is close to a factory in Vranjic. Her boyfriend, Srdjan, is going to work in Germany as a dentist and is leaving Nina and her strong, but blind mother, Carmen, for good. Nina is waiting for the results of a medical check-up.

Summertime. The Mediterranean. Siesta. The father and son are asleep in the girls bedroom, while the dining room with sea view is bustling with life. The mother and two daughters are cleaning up after lunch. A tennis ball falls onto the balcony. The youngest daughter runs out. After talking to her boyfriend, she puts on tango music and the sisters start dancing. The mother sits down on the chair outside and looks out towards the sea. The father is awake. He looks in the direction of the sound and realizes things are about to change. Tango.

A small coastal area has been destroyed by the presence of industrial facilities. The film follows the lives of 4 protagonists, who are either fighting for their own survival among these dangerous facilities or they live in a harmonious coexistence with them.

The Dark takes place over a period of 36 hours, on the first day of summer. Taxi driver Frane lives together with his sister and her husband in an unusual strange domestic arrangement. Frane learns that his sister is pregnant and he is not sure how he feels about the baby that she is expecting. After his night shift Frane kills a young unknown woman while he is having sex with her. He tries to cover up all traces of the crime, but in doing so he commits two further murders, one of which goes wrong. Throughout the film, the victims tell their stories at the places where the murders took place. On the morning of the summer solstice Frane thinks he has managed to get away with his crimes and he goes with his sister and her husband for a picnic in the forest by the river, not knowing what awaits him there.

The nature has caressed us into being, has even taught us how to pet her back as we grew up. We then started hitting her hard, using her goods in order to progress at her expense. She stares at us reluctantly yet tolerates us as a mom would. But occasionally she freaks out, warns us with an earthquake, a pandemic, or a tsunami. shall we ever learn not to take advantage of our mom, but humbly share her goods with respect and appreciation?
